Safe Streets! Open Trails!
From an insert included with the Tour de Blount flyer - plus a
few tips from a CBC event flyer
Group Riding Tips
- Remember that cyclists have the same rights to the same
roads as other vehicles and they are subject to the same rules. So obey stop signs, stop
lights and all other traffic controls that would apply to you in a car.
Always wear a helmet.
- Help build rapport with the communities by sharing the
road with other vehicles (that's the cars!) and following ALL the traffic laws (yes, that
means stoppoing at the Stop signs.)
- Tennessee law requires that you ride no more than two
abreast and stay close to the right side of the road. When cars approach from the rear,
get in single file. That may not be possible during the initial part of the ride when so
many cyclists are grouped together.
- Call out car back to alert the riders in front
of you to pull over into a single file. If you hear a call from behind, give an
echo for riders in front of you who may not have heard it.
- Dont ride too close to the bike in front of you
unless you have experience doing so and are comfortable with that rider.
- Ride single file on hilly or windy roads. Single file at
intersections so as not to block the road.
- Always pass other cyclists on the left and alert them by
calling out on your left as you begin the pass.
- When you are in the front of a group, call out and/or
point to hazards: glass!, dog right!, car up! to
indicate an approaching car on a narrow road.
- Call out slowing or stopping to
alert those behind you.
- Call out upcoming turns and give arm signals. This is to
help cars anticipate your move as well as riders behind you.
- If you need to stop while in a group, pull completely off
the pavement.
- Be predictable.
- Have fun! - Be safe!
