A Husband's Christmas
by Steve Strain, Club President 1996-1999
January 2001
The holiday draws near
Its approach, unrelenting, strikes fear deep in my heart
For with it comes the question
That plagues mankind --
What do I get for my wife?
I am no longer beset by that other demon --
A gift for Mon -- for now I have a wife, and
When she asks the dreaded question,
"What do we get for your
mother?"
I have but to shrug.
But the wife gift --
A duty I cannot shirk and so I go forth, alone
Joined by my married brothers in our quest
Tilting at windmills
Repeating our mantra --
Nothing that plugs in
As we cast about the mall
Sizes and colors a blur in the din of the holiday.
Dresses boxed, shoes wrapped -- and
Glittery things from the jewelers all gathered under the tree
And I wait, like a batter on a full count as ..........
She carefully unwraps, saving the paper --
And bestows a smile and a kiss with the words --
"you shouldn't have"
And all is well in the world for another
year.
