Bad Weather Tips

by Bill Rogers

March 1999

I don’t claim to be a writer, and sometimes ideas are hard to come by. Realizing this, BW suggested that I start making notes after a ride. As I was looking back over my notes, it dawned on me that I’ve been on some pretty neat rides in the last few weeks, all of them close to home. When you see it written down in black and white, it makes you realize how fortunate we are to have all the great places to ride that we have around here.

One other thing I have noticed about keeping notes... it really brings back the memories of the good times (or in some cases, the bad). Just a quick glance and you’re back on that trail.

Here are a few of my notes:

2/4/99 Thursday night ride at Iron Mtn with Tony Thompson. The ride up the dirt rode is similar to Clemmer -- long and steep. The trail was in great shape, but a few trees were down.

2/6/99 Saturday club ride with Bill & Jane on Mobray Mtn . Big crowd (18). Hot chocolate in the cabin. Awesome singletrack.

2/11/99 Thursday night ride with Suck Creek Cycles. Eight people +, including me, rode at Edward's Point . The pace was very fast. Fire road really muddy.

2/13/99 Saturday. Danny Nanny and I rode up Clemmer to the campground and rode part of Azalea , but it was covered with blow downs. We hooked up with a new guy. Rode up Slick Rock to Upper Slick Rock and back down Clemmer . Good ride. Cold, snow on ground, ice on derailiers.

2/15/99 Tuesday Night. Iron Mtn with Tony Thompson. Deja-vu.

2/20/99 Saturday Club Ride. Matt Phillips, Oak Mtn in Birmingham. Great weather and ride. Daisy finally got to see my favorite place. Rode with two local guys. One of them was a former BMX’er -- fast and fit.

2/21/99 Sunday Club Ride at Edward's Point. Really cold weather! I led the group on some of the new trails. A lot of hike-a-bike involved, not everyone likes riding in rocks like I do.

2/27/99 Saturday Club Work Day. David Cook led a small, but dedicated group of volunteers. It was rainy and cold, but we still accomplished quite a bit.

If you don’t keep a journal of your rides, you should at least try to jot down a few notes somewhere. Then look back on them from time-to-time. I think you’ll be amazed to see how much it helps you remember.

Festival News. Things are really starting to shape up. Committee chairmen are as follows: Ride leader -- John Beverly, Food and Cooking -- Morgan & Hilda Fraley, and Games -- Cindy Rice. There is still plenty of work to do to make this event successful. All of our committees have room for more volunteers, so don’t hesitate to pitch in. If you want to help out, please come to the meeting next week.

HAPPY TRAILS, BILL
