Fairy Tale Land
by John Beverly, CBC President 2000
Fall is near and so are the fall festivals. It seems like just a few days ago we were
celebrating the new millenium and suddenly we are starting school and football and just a
stones throw from the holiday season. I wanted to do a lot more this year than I was able
to do, personally and in business and with the bike club. We still have a lot to do this
year, with the Tanasi Festival and the 2 for 1 Century coming up, so I'm not relaxing
just yet. The first week of September, I will be calling around to those of you who have
answered the call to help with the various events. I really do appreciate all of you who
have volunteered.
Let's all do a little for the events and spread the word. Send e-mails and call all of
your fiends and let's make the hard work that we put into them worth the effort by getting
everyone we know to come. Check out the website for details. (Chattbike.com) Also, check
out Active.com. We are now listed there. It is an event publication service. They also
allow you to register online and pay by credit card. Spread the word about it. Get your
bikes in the shop if they need it and get out and ride and be in shape for the Tanasi on
Sep 30 weekend and the 2 for 1 Century on Oct 7 and 8. I am really looking forward to the
biggest attendance yet, for both of these events. The weather is going to be great I can
feel it. The sun will be out and the temperature will be just right and the fun will over
flowing. Be sure to pre-register!!!
I recently went a short ride at Edwards Point during a pouring rainstorm. I was
escorting a new rider and we were desperate to go, rain or shine. I experienced a fairy
tale like sensation during that ride. Might have been some paint fumes in my water bottle
again, I don't know, but the sun was shining through the trees and it was pouring rain.
The water puddles glistened with each drop that broke the surface. The air was steamy in
the distance but eerily clear in the immediate area surrounding us. It was like a movie
set, surealistic and ominously beautiful. It was like Fairy Tale Land at Rock City. I was
poised to defend myself from a band of trolls that might jump from behind the trees at any
second. I remember something like this another time last year during the Tanasi Festival.
I was escorting two riders during a pouring rainstorm. They insisted on going and wanted
an escort, so I took them straight up the mountain. Soon they were ready to turn around,
but I lead them into a meadow, instead, along an old dead road. We experienced that same
weird sensation of bright sun and pouring rain through the trees. The air was steamy in
the distance and I was sure the Mad Hatter would trot right of the forest and across our
path. Have any of you had this experience or do I need to check into the Bend? I recently
got hit very hard on the head and experienced a severe concussion and perhaps my mind
hasn't completely cleared. That is why I missed the ride Sunday. I didn't even remember
the ride. I barely knew where I was for three days. We'll make it up in a couple of weeks.
Try the "riding in the pouring rain" thing and double check me on this. Be
careful. It can be a little dangerous. You know, I don't remember anything especially
weird from my childhood, like being visited by vicious elves, that might cause latent
psychotic episodes and, no, I don't hate my mother, but just in case, are there any
psychologists in the bike club that'll give me a discount?
