Lots of Stuff Coming Up

by John Beverly, CBC President 2000

It’s really feeling like spring lately. I have been riding my bike more and more everyday. It’s a good start to the new millennium. Hopefully the weather will continue to be mild and we will have good attendance at the Ocoee Fat Tire Festival and the 3-State 3-Mountain Challenge. I look forward to participating in both. Please register as early as possible for the event(s) that you will be attending this year. I can’t stress enough the importance of pre-registration to our organizers, for the sake of logistical planning. Keep tabs on the web site (www.ChattBike.com) for breaking news and details.

I know some of you already know about the changes in our web site, but for everyone else, the meeting this month will be an opportunity to get caught up. Chris Gilligan and Daisy have been working overtime on the improvement and modernization of our internet capabilities. We now have an Interactive Calendar. At the meeting on March 7th, Chris and Daisy will be instructing us about its benefits and use. It should be a very effective way to schedule impromptu rides or rides that you wish to organize yourself at unusual times. I urge everyone to attend this meeting and learn how this new internet tool will affect you and the bike club.

We will also be discussing the final details of the Ocoee Festival and the Challenge. Both events will be within one week of each other and will require an extra measure of dedication on the part of the officers and their assistants. Please offer your help to Bill Rogers in charge of the Ocoee Festival (April 28-30) and Dawn Salyer in charge of the Century (May 6).

We will make the meeting somewhat of a party, in honor of John Oakey, for the years of dedicated service that he has given to the bike club. We will present him with a thank you gift (maybe an autographed poster of Woody), shake his hand and release him to "wild world of biking", to enjoy being an honored member of the bike club. We will make merry and there will be door prizes too!! Yippee!!

This year I actually will follow through with the Ellijay ride that I talked about last year. It is a road ride about 60 miles long and a little challenging, due to rolling terrain. I haven’t set an exact date but it will be in the early fall, to take advantage of the apple season and the unique scenery in that area. Perhaps some of us can stay overnight in Helen and enjoy a little of the night life. If anyone else has a good idea for a "special ride", please get it to the appropriate ride coordinator as soon as possible, so everyone will have time to make plans. A few of these, during the year, will really spice up the schedule and serve as mini vacations for those of us who are "tied to work".

Daisy is updating the membership directory. Please send her your most current information as soon as possible. She will publishing it within the next few weeks.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting Tuesday night. Feel free to call me at 876-1325 or e-mail at CHATTBIKE@aol.com.
