Bike Odyssey 2001
by John Beverly, CBC President 2000-current year
The next millennium is here and I feel an extra heavy burden to make my
new years resolutions really mean something. I resolve to do a lot of things, but as far
as biking is concerned, I want to get really up to speed on my road bike this year.
I resolve to work less and enjoy more. (That might be tough one.) I
don't really have any bad habits to break, so I'll just work on improvements:
I resolve to ride 90% of the Thursday night rides and 75% of the
Saturday rides.
I also vow to make my "shotgun" rides every month, (I ride 32
miles as fast as I can, non-stop. To my mom's house and back) and get faster each time. I
will attempt to average 21 mph, on the "shotgun", even if I have a heart attack
trying.
I pledge to climb Robert's Mill road at least 5 times this year,
without stopping and Suck Creek and Monteagle at least 10 times each. That should get me
basically where I need to be in the strength and duration department.
I also resolve to log my progress this year in an attempt to manage my
improvement.
OK. So what are you going to do this year, as far as biking is
concerned? I hope everyone will attempt to get stronger and ride more, but most of all,
have fun and good fellowship. I hope each of you will attend the four big events this
year, or offer to lend a hand. We need to fill some empty spaces in the officer lineup and
I hope some of you will step forward and offer to fill those positions. Let's spread the
workload a little so no one person has to miss out on all of the fun.
I really wish the weather was better and I didn't have to work today,
because I feel a strong urge to ride my bike. I have felt the call a lot lately and it
seems the weather wishes to build my anxiety. I have not been available to do much riding
over the past few months and I am starting to really miss it.
I think I'll go ahead and take the mountain bike out in the mud. I just
hate cleaning up afterward. Maybe something interesting will happen about which I can
write a good story. Who knows, maybe those riding glasses I got for Christmas will cause a
visual correction or maybe I'll ride into an eerie fog and experience a weird time warp
effect or an "Outer Limits" experience. Nah!
I'll just get muddy, but I can't wait. I think I'll knock off early.
PS The Christmas Party will be at Daisy's house, again this year. I
hope everyone can attend. I will have a special little gift for everyone present.
If you need to get in touch with me you may call 876-1325 or e-mail
Chattbike@aol.com. Let me know how things are going and if there is anything you would
like to see happen for the bike club for next year.
