by John Beverly, CBC President 2000

I first want to express my personal thanks to Daisy and Hugh for hosting the annual Christmas party again this year. I think I can safely include the appreciation of all who attended. We had a great time. (Except Sam who didn’t win a single thing!) For those of you who missed the party, we gave Steve a very special thank you gift, a beautiful, autographed and framed poster of Lance Armstrong. Once again, thanks Steve and Karen, and thanks to all the bike shops who donated prizes; Owen, Suck Creek, East Ridge and River City. If you missed this year’s party, be sure to make it next year.

I want to express my personal thanks and the thanks of all members of the Chattanooga Bike Club to John Oakey who has served magnificently as the ride coordinator for several years. It is easy to take for granted the job he has done until you consider the hard work that is behind gathering ride leaders for every week of the year. It will take two people to fill the job he has done by himself. We will miss him, but we understand that eventually we all must "step back" and enjoy the bike club. Let’s all remember that the officers who work so hard eventually will need to be replaced. I encourage you to "step up" and offer your assistance to the club and serve in an officer position at some time during your involvement with this great organization.

I called a meeting of the club officers on Jan. 24 to discuss a few minor changes in the structure of the club, in order to better provide the necessary attention to each of the two distinct divisions of biking that we have within our organization: Road Biking and Mountain Biking. Dawn Salyer will serve as the Vice President in Charge of Road Biking and will work with Mike Walsh who will serve as the ride coordinator of road biking. Bill Rogers will serve as the Vice President in Charge of Mountain Biking and will work with Hugh Worthy who will serve as the ride coordinator of mountain biking. Please refer any ideas, suggestions, complaints or comments about each of the specific divisions to the Vice Pres. in charge. Remember, this is your club and these are your representatives and they can only represent those interests that they know, so make yours known. Their phone numbers are included in every newsletter.

I have drafted Mike Walsh to serve as the ride coordinator of road biking for the remainder of 2000. He has an energetic, "can-do" attitude and will serve the club well. Please cooperate with him and volunteer your services as a ride leader whenever possible.

We will begin in March with two sets of organized rides. One column of the schedule will be Road and the other will be Mountain. This system will address both groups of riders equally. This change is a direct response to your comments, suggestions and complaints. The officers of the club do listen, so let your ideas be heard.

I encourage everyone to help the club gain new members. Please encourage your riding buddies who are not members to sign up. If you know someone who is new to biking, bring them along and show them how much more fun and safe biking can be with an organized group.

Feel free to call me at 510-9593 or e-mail at CHATTBIKE@aol.com.
