Guilty Pleasures

January 2000

Amidst all fear and loathing generated by Y2K freaks, I have remained pretty calm. I normally have enough camping paraphernalia crammed in the trunk of my car to keep me fed, watered, and housed for a couple of weeks. If cars stop working, I have 4 bikes to choose from to meet my transportation needs. No big deal. It might even be fun to see the system grind to a halt as my friends and I pedal by.

Though I didn't do a single race in 1999, I think it was my best year ever as a biker. I have really gotten into trail maintenance this year, and it has been rewarding and fun. My kids are getting more motivated to ride their bikes...especially my son. As they get older and faster, I'll get older and slower, so we may even have a few years in which our abilities overlap; I'm really looking forward to that.

Y2K Resolutions:

I'm putting these in print so my fellow bikers will remind me of my good intentions...

  • Ride the 3-State 3-Mountain Challenge in 2000

  • Build more lean muscle mass

  • Kill fewer brain cells

  • Don't smoke...don't even think about it

  • Teach the kids to ride on trails...be patient, go slow

  • Take longer rides with the kids...be patient, go slow

  • Attend an out-of-state (preferably out-of-region) bike festival

  • Earn my keep on the trails by donating at least 20 hours of work

  • Ride my spiffy new road bike every chance I get (at the risk of being a geek)

  • Teach and learn better techniques at every opportunity

  • Run, run, run while my knees can still take the abuse

  • Drink less coffee, drink better coffee

  • Support my local bike shops

  • Try hard to think about something other than bikes
