The Full Challenge takes riders up and down 3 mountains -- Raccoon, Sand and Lookout. Riders leave Chattanooga heading south. Quickly the road turns up on Hwy 41, leading to the right turn onto Raccoon Mountain Road. You go up, up, up to the top of Raccoon Mountain. Riders will loop around the Reservoir before descending to Highway 41 and on the way toward Alabama and the goat-path climb up Sand Mountain. Once down Sand Mountain, the route travels to Hwy 299 in Wildwood Georgia. The intersection of Hwy 299 and Hwy. 11 is the cut-off point. If you are not here (75 miles) by 2:00 PM, you must turn left and follow the route back into Chattanooga. Riders take a right on Hwy 11 followed by a left onto Birmingham Highway and a left onto Creek Road .... over to the base of the third big climb of the day -- Burkhalter Gap, the climb up Lookout Mountain. This is where the Challenge the Gap competition takes place. Once at the top, the road travels across the mountain out of Georgia and into Tennessee. Riders will descend via Ochs Highway and into the Chattanooga city limits. A short flat ride down Broad Street takes you to the finish at Finley Stadium. |
