CHATTANOOGA BICYCLE CLUBGermany and Austria Bike ToursSeptember 2003by Jim JohnsonWeve decided on two back-to-back
tours for the Chattanooga Bicycle Clubs September trip to Austrian AlpsSeptember 5-14, 2003Only $1,395 including airfare, accommodations, breakfasts and luggage transfers The TauernradwegTauern Bike Pathopened about seven years ago and is already one of Europes most popular. The trip will be designed both for smiley-face riders and for those who prefer a little extra challenge. The route is almost entirely on an asphalt bike path or small side roads and runs through a deep, wide mountain valley in the Alps. Much of the route travels through farmland and small Alpine towns and villages. Our tour starts in Salzburg, one of the worlds most enchanting cities. From there, we travel through Bavaria to Kaprun, our gateway to the Austrian Alps. Daily distances will average only 25-30 miles or so, so we can sightsee and explore along the way or go hiking when we get to our destination. The train tracks run parallel to our route for much of the way, and trains provide an alternative for those who dont feel like riding. Also, although the route is almost entirely downhill through a wide alpine valley, there are several routes up smaller valleys that stretch to each side. The tour ends in Salzburg, where we can sightsee or explore by bike or add mileage through the nearby lake region. See the article Downhill All the Way for more information on the route. One days route will include part of the Tour de France 2000 route. Then we head into the Black Forest, where well be based in mountain villages. From the villages, well have a primary guided tour each day; for example, a 20-mile off-road ramble past farming villages. For those who wish additional challenge, optional rides will be available with greater distance, hills, speed, technical terrain, or all of the above; for example, a 40-mile single-track circuit with multiple steep climbs. Those who want to take time off from cycling can take advantage of an extensive network of hiking trailsor just chill at our country inn. Click here for details and itenerary.Reservation,
