Help Secure funds for the
SOUTH CHICKAMAUGA CREEK GREENWAY!
The
City of Chattanooga has an opportunity this year to obtain funding to complete a
7-mile stretch of the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway. A total of $1.6 million is needed for this project from upcoming
federal transportation reauthorization legislation. Congress will decide on
transportation and trail funding in the next several weeks, so action now is
critical! A local foundation has committed the $400,000 needed to match the
federal funds for a total of $2 million for this project.
Congress is in the
process of rewriting the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st
Century (TEA-21), which authorizes federal surface transportation programs.
Included in this bill will be funding for specific projects known as High
Priority Projects. In addition to roads, bridges, and rail projects, related
activities such as bikeways and walkways can also be funded. This provides an
opportunity to secure funding for important greenway projects such as the South
Chickamauga Creek Greenway in Chattanooga.
CONTACT CONGRESSMAN ZACH WAMP NOW TO
URGE HIS SUPPORT FOR THIS IMPORTANT HIGH PRIORITY PROJECT!
-
The South Chickamauga Creek Greenway links together
many of Chattanooga’s neighborhoods and offers residents the opportunity to
bike to local parks, recreational centers, and historic sites. The South
Chickamauga Creek is home to many documented Trail of Tears and Civil War
sites.
-
Congressman Wamp is the Chairman of the House Fitness Caucus, so it is
important to let him know how important the South Chickamauga Creek trail is
to the health and fitness of Chattanooga residents.
-
This
new seven-mile corridor will connect the 12-mile long Riverwalk to the
five-mile Brainerd Levee and finally to the Camp Jordan Recreational Complex
in East Ridge. This means someone could walk or bike from downtown
Chattanooga toward the Chickamauga dam, cross under Amnicola Highway near the
Riverpark, follow the new trail to the Levee, pass the Eastgate area, and
complete the trip at Camp Jordan. The connected greenway will be 24 miles in
length.
-
The
City of Chattanooga has already spent over $1 million on the existing 5 miles
of trail.
-
A
generous local foundation has committed the required $400,000 matching funds.
PLEASE ACT NOW!
